Disney has found Rapunzel’s mother. Caitríona Balfe, the five-time Golden Globe nominee best known for “Outlander,” has been cast as Queen Arianna in the studio’s live-action “Tangled,” according to an announcement made during the D23 panel on Friday.
The actress joins a rapidly filling Kingdom of Corona. Elliot Cowan (“The Crown”) will play King Frederic, while Patrick and Hugo McPherson will take on the Stabbington twins. They join previously announced stars Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, Kathryn Hahn as the villain Mother Gothel and Diego Luna as a new character named Hawthorne.
A Royal Family Comes Together
Balfe wasn’t featured in the footage Disney teased at D23, but her casting completes the picture of the royal family that loses Rapunzel as a baby — and eventually gets her back. Michael Gracey directs from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor.
“While ‘Outlander’ star Caitríona Balfe was not featured in the footage teased Friday at D23, Disney has announced the 5x Golden Globe nominee will play Rapunzel’s long-lost mother,” Deadline reported.
Disney also used the panel to announce a March 31, 2028 release date and offered a first look at Croft and Hahn in the film. For fans of the 2010 animated original, it’s the latest sign Disney is betting big on its princess catalog following the live-action “Moana” and “Lilo & Stitch.” The original film starred Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as Flynn Ryder, with Donna Murphy, Ron Perlman, Brad Garrett and Jeffrey Tambor rounding out the voice cast.
Why It Matters
Live-action remakes are Disney’s riskiest and most profitable habit, and “Tangled” has been a long-rumored target. Landing a prestige actress like Balfe signals the studio wants this one to feel like more than a copy-paste of the animated hit. With the royal family now in place and a 2028 date locked, the Kingdom of Corona is officially a cornerstone of Disney’s theatrical slate — and the next chapter of Rapunzel’s story finally has a face.
