Hayden Panettiere, the “Heroes” cheerleader who became one of the defining television stars of the 2000s, has died at age 36. Her representative confirmed the news to Deadline.

The actress died in South Carolina, according to a source. Police and EMS personnel in Greenville responded to a report of an “unresponsive female” around 1:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, August 16. “Upon arrival, medical assistance was administered; however, the individual, later identified as Hayden Panettiere, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” a Greenville Police Department spokesperson said.

“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.” — Skip Panettiere, her father

A Career That Defined a Generation

Panettiere was a child star before she was a superstar. She spent four years on “One Life to Live” beginning in 1994, made her big-screen debut at age 9 in “A Bug’s Life,” and starred in Disney’s “Tiger Cruise.” But it was 2006’s “Heroes” that made her a household name as Claire Bennet, the high school cheerleader who couldn’t be killed.

She went on to lead ABC’s country-music drama “Nashville” as rising star Juliette Barnes, and appeared in three “Scream” films as the resourceful Kirby Reed. She also lent her voice to Kairi in the “Kingdom Hearts” video game franchise.

Panettiere was open about her struggles with addiction and mental health. She told People she was given “happy pills” at 15, and later spoke publicly about the postpartum depression she experienced after the birth of her daughter Kaya in 2014. In 2023, her younger brother Jensen died at 28.

Why It Matters

Panettiere’s death at just 36 is a heartbreaking end to a life and career that so many fans grew up alongside — a woman who carried the weight of fame, loss, and addiction with startling honesty. Her openness about her own battles made her a voice for others facing the same. As her family asks for privacy in the days ahead, fans are left remembering the spark that lit up screens for nearly three decades.
