'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' Sequel Set Up at Paramount With Kate Hudson to Produce

Marcus Thorne ·

Paramount is developing a sequel to the 2003 rom-com 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,' with original star Kate Hudson attached to produce. The studio hopes she and Matthew McConaughey will reprise their roles, but a screenwriter has yet to be hired.

Andie and Benjamin might be getting back together. A sequel to the 2003 romantic comedy “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” is in the works at Paramount, with original star Kate Hudson attached to produce, Variety reported exclusively on Monday. The project is in early development, with the cast and several key creative roles yet to be chosen, according to a source close to the production.

The plan is for Hudson and her co-star from the original, Matthew McConaughey, to reprise their roles. The sequel is currently looking for a screenwriter, and casting will depend on the take they land on. Stacey Sher, the veteran producer behind “Pulp Fiction,” “Erin Brockovich,” and “Django Unchained,” is on board to produce alongside Hudson through her Shiny Penny banner.

The Rom-Com Revival Rolls On

The original, directed by Donald Petrie, followed magazine columnist Andie Anderson (Hudson), who tries to seduce advertising executive Benjamin Barry (McConaughey) only to transform into the girlfriend from hell as research for a dating article. Benjamin, betting his boss he can make any woman fall for him, is determined to make it stick. Naturally, real love blooms from the chaos.

The film grossed nearly $180 million worldwide on a reported $50 million budget, and it holds up as an essential title in the genre. A follow-up felt inevitable amid the Y2K nostalgia wave sweeping Hollywood: 2026 alone has already delivered “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “Scary Movie,” and “Toy Story 5,” all outsized hits built on late-’90s and early-2000s material. “Practical Magic 2” and “Focker-In-Law” arrive in theaters soon, with “Shrek 5” and Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia” on deck for 2027.

Hudson’s most recent big-screen role was 2025’s “Song Sung Blue,” which earned her a second Oscar nomination, and she currently leads the Netflix sports comedy “Running Point.” McConaughey, who won the 2014 Best Actor Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club,” only recently ended a six-year big-screen hiatus with “The Rivals of Amziah King.” Neither Hudson’s nor McConaughey’s reps immediately responded to Variety’s request for comment.

Why It Matters

The rom-com revival is one of Hollywood’s most reliable bets right now, and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” is exactly the kind of beloved, rewatchable title studios are betting on. Reuniting Hudson and McConaughey would be the rare sequel that trades purely on nostalgia chemistry — the thing that made the original a streaming staple long after theaters moved on. With Sher’s pedigree and the current demand for throwback romantic comedies, a “How to Lose a Guy 2” could become one of the most anticipated rom-coms in years, if Paramount can lock the talent down.
