The dancing clown is officially back. HBO announced a Season 2 renewal for It: Welcome to Derry, its Stephen King prequel series from Warner Bros. Television and executive producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti.
The move had been widely expected for some time, with HBO reportedly waiting on the creative take for the new season before signing off. While Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane co-showran Season 1, Kane is now set to take over as sole showrunner for the second run.
“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation.”
That’s Sarah Aubrey, Head of HBO Max Original Programming, on the renewal. She promised the new season will “break new ground,” deepening “the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”
A New Decade of Dread
Season 2 jumps the story to 1935, in the middle of the Great Depression. The new arc revolves around the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror at the hands of the town’s resident nightmare.
Bill Skarsgård, the face of the Muschiettis’ big-screen It films, returns to reprise his role as Pennywise the Clown. Season 1 saw him share the screen with Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige and James Remar, among others.
The Muschiettis framed the renewal as a privilege. “Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege,” they said. “The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”
Why It Matters
Since premiering last October, It: Welcome to Derry has ranked among the top four series premieres globally in HBO Max history, proof that the King-verse still has serious pull. Moving the timeline back to the 1930s opens up a fresh era of Pennywise lore and gives the writers room to deepen the mythology beyond the films. For horror fans, Derry is far from done with us yet.
