Larry David finally has someone to blame for the tan suit — and it’s Larry David.
In the finale of HBO’s “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness,” Barack Obama makes a cameo that revisits the most memed moment of his presidency: the 2014 press conference where he wore a tan suit and set off a media firestorm that drew criticism from outlets ranging from the New York Times to GQ to Fox News. The sketch’s twist? David is the one who put him in it.
How the Sketch Plays Out
In the scene, Obama is prepping for the ISIS press conference while a mango smoothie sits on the Resolute Desk. David asks for a sip; Obama refuses, citing “old lips” on his straw. When the president steps out, David takes a sip anyway — and spills it all over the navy suit Obama planned to wear. His solution: convince Obama the tan suit is the move, because it’s “casual Friday.” Cue the classic “prettay… prettay… prettay good.”
The idea came from Obama himself and Higher Ground executive producer Ethan Lewis, who told Variety: “From the very beginning, my dream was to close the book on the tan suit once and for all.”
Directing a Former President
Co-creator Jeff Schaffer, who has worked with David since the “Seinfeld” days, told Variety the four-hour shoot was surreal — from Obama giving David notes (“Larry, you’re coming in late!”) to the Oval Office set, built by the Obamas’ own interior designer Michael S. Smith, being so accurate that the former president said it looked exactly like the real thing.
“His comic timing was impeccable. He was a good actor, not just as a former president, but, like, as an actor.” — Jeff Schaffer, via Variety
There was also the ketchup rant: “No one should be using ketchup after age 12. That’s a child’s condiment. It’s just sugar. Use mustard! Use an adult condiment!”
Why It Matters
“Life, Larry” was billed as a seven-episode limited series marking America’s 250th anniversary — a show produced by the Obamas’ Higher Ground that lets one of comedy’s greatest grumps haunt U.S. history. Lewis and Schaffer both say they’d love to extend it, though Lewis doubts Obama will make a career pivot into acting. For now, the tan suit — which has its own Wikipedia page — has officially been retired, and a former president got to blame Larry David for it. That’s about as 2026 as it gets.
