Marvel’s mutant team is finally taking shape. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced the inaugural members of the MCU’s X-Men at D23 on Friday, and the lineup is a mix of young stars and bold casting choices.
The roster includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Prof. X and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver will play the villainous Mr. Sinister. The movie hits theaters May 5, 2028.
It’s the first time the X-Men have assembled on screen since Fox’s 2019 “Dark Phoenix.” That film featured James McAvoy as Prof. Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique and Nicholas Hoult as Beast. Now the team returns as an official part of the MCU — and the fan response was immediate.
A New Era for the Mutants
The X-Men franchise has bounced between eras for two decades. Fox’s original trilogy starred Patrick Stewart as Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto, before a younger cast took over in “First Class,” “Days of Future Past” and “Apocalypse.” Channing Tatum’s Gambit made a splash in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and the old mutant lineup is even reprising roles in this year’s “Avengers: Doomsday” to battle Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.).
“Adam Driver is introduced as Mister Sinister in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ at D23,” Variety reported alongside the first footage.
For many fans, the casting of Christopher Abbott as Prof. X and the return to a proper team structure signals Marvel is treating the X-Men like the event they’ve always promised to be. Maya Boyd, a Broadway star, takes on Storm — one of the most beloved roles in the franchise’s history.
Why It Matters
The X-Men are arguably the most important intellectual property Marvel has been holding back, and this cast reveal finally puts a face to the future. With the old guard showing up in “Doomsday” and a brand-new team coming in 2028, the X-Men are being woven into the MCU’s ongoing story rather than rebooted in isolation. For audiences who grew up on the animated series or the Fox films, it’s the start of the mutant comeback they’ve been waiting years to see.
