Ariana Grande is taking a step back. Her team announced on Aug. 2 that she will pull back from public visibility and appearances once the Eternal Sunshine tour wraps up — and on stage in Chicago the next night, she made sure fans heard the reason straight from her.
“I heard that my fans were worried that negativity was ruining things for me, but I just have to say that could not be more the f— opposite,” she told the crowd, pushing back on the idea that critics had driven her decision.
“Human beings can need a break sometimes. And also, this can be and will continue to be the greatest experience of my professional and creative life.” — Ariana Grande, in Chicago
The Tour’s Final Stretch
The Eternal Sunshine tour’s final date is scheduled for Sept. 1 in London. The run has been a victory lap for one of pop’s most decorated current acts: her new album, “Petal,” arrived July 31 and was led by “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — her 10th career leader, tying her for the 10th-most No. 1s in the chart’s history.
That followed “Eternal Sunshine” (2024), which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with the largest opening week of any album that year and produced the Hot 100 No. 1s “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” and “Yes, And?” — all while Grande picked up an Academy Award nomination for her role in “Wicked.”
Family First
Her brother Frankie Grande was quick to show support, posting alongside a clip of Ariana performing “One Last Time” on the tour: “Family forever. I will have your back until the end of time.” The two are half-siblings who share their mother, Joan Grande.
Why It Matters
Ariana Grande isn’t just any star taking a breather — she’s one of the most commercially successful pop artists of her era, coming off a chart-topping album and an Oscar-nominated film role. When an artist at the top of that mountain says she needs a break, it’s a reminder that the grind of touring, releasing and performing doesn’t stop just because the numbers do. For fans, the Sept. 1 London finale now carries real weight: it’s the last time they’ll see her on stage for a while.
