Bonnie Tyler Dies at 75: Remembering the Voice Behind 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'

The Welsh singer behind the 1983 Hot 100 No. 1 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' died unexpectedly in hospital in Portugal. She was 75.

Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose raspy, powerful voice carried “Total Eclipse of the Heart” to four weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983, died unexpectedly on July 9 in a Portuguese hospital. She was 75.

A representative confirmed on Tyler’s official Facebook page that she had “passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.” The singer had been in and out of care since emergency intestinal surgery in May at a hospital in Faro, near her home in Portugal’s Algarve region.

The Voice That Defined a Generation

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Neath, Wales, Tyler first broke through in the late 1970s with the ballad “It’s a Heartache,” which sold over six million copies and reached the Top 10 across Europe and the United States. But it was 1983’s Total Eclipse of the Heart — written and produced by Jim Steinman — that transformed her into one of the most recognizable voices in pop history.

The track spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Tyler the first Welsh-born singer to top the chart at that time. She followed with “Holding Out for a Hero,” featured on the Footloose soundtrack — a song that became an enduring karaoke staple.

Tyler’s vocal style, shaped by emergency surgery for vocal cord polyps early in her career, gave her a sandpaper-tinged edge that critics described as “the greatest rasp in British pop since Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.”

A Career That Never Stopped

Across more than five decades, Tyler released 18 studio albums. She represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with “Believe in Me.” She was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023 for her services to music.

Upcoming dates included festivals across the UK and Europe in summer 2026, and a headlining show at Cardiff’s Utilita Arena penciled for December 17.

Why It Matters

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” has entered the small club of songs that will outlive every one of us — a full solar eclipse will occur on August 23, 2044, and the song will almost certainly be played. Tyler’s smash has racked up over 1.3 billion Spotify streams, and its cultural footprint shows no signs of shrinking.
