Taylor Swift has announced The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, an extended edition of her 12th studio album that arrives Friday with four new tracks, including the freshly announced single “Patient Zero.”

Swift revealed the news on social media, writing that her fans gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history roughly a year ago. “Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs,” she explained, referring to a celebratory trip to Sweden with producers Max Martin and Shellback, her two collaborators on the record. The new songs are “born out of pure gratitude,” she said.

A Record-Breaking Run, Extended

The Life of a Showgirl launched on Oct. 3 with 12 tracks, and Swift initially insisted there was nothing else coming. “I wanted to do an album that was so focused on quality and on the theme and everything fitting together like a perfect puzzle, that these 12 songs for my 12th album, I feel like we achieved that,” she said during an appearance on New Heights, the podcast hosted by her husband Travis Kelce. “You couldn’t add one.”

That stance has now shifted. The Encore edition brings the track list to 16 songs, adding “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon” to the original sequence. The announcement follows days of era-style teases: Swift’s website shifted from orange to dark gray, three CD versions of “Patient Zero” appeared in her store, and she updated her social media profile pictures, which has historically signaled a new chapter in the singer’s eras.

The “Patient Zero” Lead-Up

Swift teased the single on Tuesday without initially labeling it a lead track from the deluxe edition, but fans noticed the album’s logo underneath the CD single versions on her official website, confirming the connection. Each of the three “Patient Zero” CD versions features a different black-and-white cover of the singer wearing black, matching the moody visual direction Swift rolled out across her channels.

“I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made.” — Taylor Swift

Why It Matters

The Encore release turns the biggest first-week album of Swift’s career into an even larger creative statement. After publicly insisting that The Life of a Showgirl was a closed, 12-track puzzle, Swift has reversed course with a deluxe expansion — a move that extends the album’s commercial run and resets the conversation around her most commercially dominant era. For fans, it also closes the loop on a year of speculation about “Patient Zero,” which now lands as the anchor of what Swift is positioning as the record’s proper, expanded edition. If the original album’s debut is any measure, the Encore’s additional songs are poised to make a significant splash on the charts in the coming weeks, building on the momentum Swift already established with her Songwriters Hall of Fame induction earlier this year.
