'The Beast In Me' Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix With Claire Danes Returning

Marcus Thorne ·

Netflix has ordered a second season of breakout limited series 'The Beast In Me,' with Claire Danes returning in her Emmy-nominated role and Howard Gordon signing an overall deal.

Netflix has ordered a second season of the breakout limited series The Beast In Me, with Claire Danes returning in her Emmy-nominated role and executive producing. Also returning are Season 1 writers and executive producers Howard Gordon and Daniel Pearle.

Gordon, who served as showrunner on the first season, will share co-showrunner responsibilities with Pearle in Season 2. Additionally, Gordon has signed an overall deal with Netflix to develop new series exclusively for the global streamer through his Teakwood Lane Productions banner.

A Breakout Limited Series Expands

The renewal follows the show’s strong debut. The Beast In Me hit No. 1 on the Netflix Global Top 10 shows, reached the top 10 in 88 countries, and garnered 43 million views in its first seven weeks. The first season follows the cat-and-mouse game between acclaimed author Aggie Wiggs (Danes), grieving the tragic death of her young son, and her charming and dangerous new neighbor Nile Sheldon (Matthew Rhys), the prime suspect in his first wife’s disappearance.

“We always told ourselves we’d only do a second season of ‘The Beast in Me’ if we found a story that was worthy of the first — and I’m thrilled to say we found it.” — Howard Gordon

Conversations about a second season started shortly after the show debuted. Casting for the new leads alongside Danes is in advanced stages, with development well underway.

A Historic Emmy Run

Because the Season 2 renewal was not confirmed until now, the first season competed as a limited series throughout its awards run, including at the Emmys, where it earned nine nominations including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, and Lead Actress and Lead Actor nods for Danes and Rhys. It won two, for Lead Actor and Original Dramatic Score.

Rhys became the first performer to win two lead acting categories in the same year — he also won the Lead Comedy Actor trophy for Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay — and the first with a career sweep of all three lead acting categories, having previously won Lead Drama Actor for FX’s The Americans. With Season 2, The Beast In Me will transition to Drama Series awards contention, similar to HBO’s Big Little Lies and The White Lotus.

Why It Matters

The renewal reflects a pattern of Netflix extending its most successful limited series, following the blueprint of Untamed, which became a drama series with its lead continuing in a new story. For the streamer, keeping Danes and a proven Emmy favorite in the fold is a ratings and prestige win, while Gordon’s new overall deal locks in a prolific showrunner behind hit series like 24 and Homeland. The decision also reshapes the awards landscape: as more renewed “limited” series — like the recently renewed MobLand on Paramount+ — pivot to drama contention, the limited-series category keeps shifting beneath the shows that populate it.
